Hüseyin Çiçek holds a Ph.D. in Political Science (2010) from the University of Innbsruck and received a habilitation in Religious Studies from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in 2021.Previously, he studied Political Science, Catholic Theology, Islamic Studies, History, International Politics, and Anthropology at the Universities of Innsbruck and New Orleans (M.A. 2006). From 2010 to 2023, he completed numerous research stays and he worked at various Austrian and international universities and research institutions. His habilitation thesis is about religion, violence, minorities and how these influence geopolitics. As a Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Religious Studies, he will examine reconciliation processes within the Alevi and Muslim diaspora in German-speaking countries as well as the influence of Islamic states on the Muslim immigrant society in Europe. Another focus of his research is Turkey and its religion-based foreign policy since 2002.
