Bastiaan van Rijn holds a B.A. (2015) and M.A. (2017) in Religious Studies from the University of Leiden, as well as a Ph.D. (2024) in Religious Studies from the University of Bern. His research focuses on nineteenth-century esoteric figures who used science and experimentation to prove the existence of life after death. He is also interested in contemporary spiritual phenomena on the Internet, with a focus on creativity, transformation, and playfulness within the alternative religious milieu. While at the Department in the summer semester 2024, he co-ordinated a course on "Religious Studies Source Work on Visions of the Afterlife from the Middle Ages to the Present Day."
