Franz WINTER

Franz Winter is Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Graz. He holds an M.A. in Classics (1994) and Religious Studies and Theology (1998) as well as a Ph.D. in Classics (1999) and Religious Studies (2005)—all from the University of Vienna, where, in 2010, he completed his Habilitation in Religious Studies (2010). Previously, he studied and conducted research at the Universities of Graz, Salzburg, Vienna, in Rome, Boston University (Fulbright), and in Tōkyō and Kyōto. He currently teaches at the Department of Religious Studies, University of Graz. Among his major areas of interest are the history of contact between Europe and Asia from antiquity to modern times; new religious movements in East and West; Western Esotericism; religion and the media; and Islam and modernity.
