Marta Dominguez Diaz is a Senior Lecturer in Islamic Studies at the University of St. Gallen (Switzerland). She holds a B.A. in History (Barcelona, 2005), an M.A. in Islamic Societies and Cultures (SOAS, London, 2006) and a Ph.D. in Religious Studies (SOAS, London, 2010). Between 2010 and 2012 she was a postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Muslim-Jewish Relations at the Woolf Institute (Cambridge). Dr Dominguez Diaz uses an anthropological approach to the study of transnational Sufism of North-African origin. She is also interested in understanding the social role ritual plays in processes of identity-making among Muslim communities in Western Europe. Her research findings have been published in a monograph Women in Sufism: Female Religiosities in a Transnational Order (Routledge, 2015) and in a number of peer-reviewed articles. She is currently exploring the use of Andalusian cultural traits in the production of ethnic identity in Tunisia after the Jasmine revolution, the results of which will appear in her forthcoming book Tunisia’s Andalusians: The Cultural Identity of a North African Minority (Edinburgh University Press). As a Senior Research Fellow of the Department of Religious Studies (2018–2023) she will conduct research on issues of religious authority and authorisation among members of Arab Sufi groups in Europe.
