Dr. Elli Papazoi is a Classical Archaeologist and Museologist whose research focuses on ancient Greek religion and on the intersections of archaeology and cultural heritage within the context of cultural diplomacy. She studied History and Archaeology at the University of Ioannina (B.A., 2014) and Classical Archaeology at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (M.A., 2018). During her studies, she was awarded several prestigious scholarships, and her doctoral research was likewise supported by a scholarship. She received her doctorate with distinction from the Department of Classics at the University of Graz (Dr. phil., 2024), with a dissertation entitled Sanctuaries and Cults of Female Deities in Ancient Arcadia: A Contribution to Cult Topography from the Geometric to the Hellenistic Period. During her doctoral studies, she worked at the University of Graz as a University Assistant (Pre-Doc) and Lecturer in the fields of Archaeology and Museology. Alongside her academic research, she has extensive museological expertise and many years of professional experience in the museum sector. She participated in numerous international research projects on ancient sanctuaries, particularly in Greece (Dodona, Samos, Attica, Kalapodi, and Pheneos) and Italy (Nemi), among others in collaboration with the Austrian Archaeological Institute (ÖAI), the German Archaeological Institute (DAI), and the Greek Antiquities Authorities. She has also curated exhibitions in Vienna and Graz focusing on Greek-Austrian cultural and reception history. As a Research Fellow at the Department of the Study of Religions, she is currently working on ancient Greek sanctuaries in the context of cultural diplomacy and their reception in nineteenth-century Vienna.
